Portugal's mainland or continental Portugal constitutes the majority of the Portuguese Republic, especially that portion of the Iberian Peninsula and hence of Continental Europe, accounting for around 95 percent of the total population and 96.6 percent of the country's area.
Mainland Residents of the Portuguese archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira refer to Portugal as the continent in all respects, even small components of joint control from Lisbon, the country's capital.
Prior to 1975, when the Portuguese empire included many now-independent African republics, the term metropolis was also used.
