AĀ light-year, alternatively spelledĀ lightyear, is aĀ unit of lengthĀ used to expressĀ astronomical distancesĀ and is equivalent to about 9.46Ā trillionĀ kilometersĀ (9.46Ɨ1012Ā km) or 5.88Ā trillionĀ milesĀ (5.88Ɨ1012Ā mi).

As defined by theĀ International Astronomical UnionĀ (IAU), a light-year is the distance thatĀ light travels in vacuumĀ in oneĀ Julian yearĀ (365.25 days).

Because it includes the word “year”, the term light-year is sometimes misinterpreted as aĀ unit of time.
