The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 9, 1865) was a civil war fought between the United States and the Confederate states.
The major reason of the war was the position of slavery, particularly its extension into areas obtained as a consequence of the Louisiana Purchase and the Mexican–American War.
On the eve of the Civil War in 1860, four million (almost 13 percent) of the 32 million Americans were enslaved black people, virtually mostly in the South.
