Chess boxing is a hybrid sport that combines the strategy and mental discipline of chess with the physical discipline of boxing. The sport was created in 2003 by Dutch artist Iepe Rubingh, and has since gained a dedicated following around the world. In chess boxing, competitors alternate between rounds of chess and boxing, with a chess round followed by a boxing round. The game is won either by knockout in the boxing ring, or by checkmate on the chessboard. The sport is designed to test a competitor's physical and mental abilities, and has been described as a “thinking man's combat sport.”
