Apollo 16 was the tenth crewed mission of NASAโ€™s Apollo program and the fifth mission to land humans on the Moon. Young and Duke conducted three EVAs totaling over 20 hours on the lunar surface. They:

  • Drove the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) more than 16 miles (26 km), setting records for mobility in rough terrain ๐Ÿš—๐ŸŒ•
  • Collected over 200 pounds (95 kg) of lunar samples
  • Deployed scientific instruments, including a Cosmic Ray Detector and a Soil Mechanics Experiment

Discoveries

Contrary to initial hypotheses, the samples showed that the highlands were not volcanic but were composed largely of impact brecciasโ€”rocks formed by meteorite impacts. This reshaped scientific understanding of lunar geology.


Command Module Experiments ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ

While Young and Duke explored the surface, Mattingly operated instruments aboard Casper to:

  • Map the Moon with a gamma-ray spectrometer and x-ray fluorescence spectrometer
  • Photograph surface features for future missions
  • Study the lunar magnetic field

Mattingly also performed a deep-space EVA after departing lunar orbit to retrieve film cassettes from the service module. ๐ŸŒŒ


Challenges and Issues โš ๏ธ

  • A malfunction in the Main Engine Gimbal System of the Service Module nearly caused mission cancellation while in lunar orbit. Engineers resolved the issue, allowing the landing to proceed.
  • The Far Ultraviolet Camera/Spectrograph, designed for astronomical observations, had difficulties but still returned valuable data on Earthโ€™s atmosphere and interstellar space.

Return to Earth ๐ŸŒ

Apollo 16 splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean on April 27, 1972. The astronauts were recovered by the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga.
