Pablo Rubinstein was a pioneer (during the 1980s) in the freezing of umbilical cord blood or placental blood cells for use in unrelated donors to cure illnesses like leukemia and hereditary disorders like Tay–Sachs disease and sickle cell anemia.

He pioneered and built an international cord blood banking system, and he has been a pioneer in international cord blood transplantation.
